THE HIDE

The hide is Japanese Black wagyu. The tanning is Himeji.

Every hide comes from Japanese Black wagyu raised for food in Japan.
Not one animal is raised for its leather.
What remains after a life has fed others is made into the finest leather it can become.
Nothing imported, nothing mixed. A single source of hide, chosen for one reason: consistency.

Himeji has been tanning leather for nearly a thousand years.
The water of the Ichikawa River. The dry climate of the Seto Inland Sea. Hands passed down through generations.
Even today, about seventy percent of Japan's cowhide leather is made here, in the region of Harima.

Every hide arrives with scars. With the marks of insect bites.
They are the record of a life that was lived.
How to make the most of each one — that is where the work begins.

THE HANDS

The grain is not stamped by a plate.

A craftsman works the tanned leather by hand.
Where to press, in which direction, how many times.
Slowly, he raises the surface until its texture begins to rise.

There are no shortcuts, and no plate to follow.
Two hides worked by the same hands will never wear the same face.
Because no two hides were ever the same to begin with.

This is what makes the lacquer possible.
Without the grain, the lacquer would have nowhere to rest.

THE LACQUER

Layer upon layer

Lacquer does not bend. Leather does nothing but bend.
Once cured, urushi lacquer cracks before it gives.
The two were never meant to be joined.

The answer lies in the grain.
The lacquer is laid only on the peaks raised by hand.
When the leather moves, the strain escapes into the valleys.
The lacquer on the peaks does not crack, and keeps its luster.

Apply, cure in the muro, apply again.
Urushi does not dry. It hardens slowly, in humid air.
What decides when it is finished is not a schedule, but the leather itself.
Weeks for a single hide. About twenty hides in a month.
There is no way to hurry this.

And once it is in the hands of the one who wears it,
the lacquer on the peaks is slowly polished by use.
The luster deepens with every wear.
